A View from Carson’s World: MiniMoto SX 2011

It’s almost MiniMoto SX time again! Hard to believe this is the eighth year. Before MiniMoto started, there were backyard races going on all over the world. It seemed like every town had some legendary backyard race going on. It was only a matter of time before pit bike racing hit the big time and it happened in 2004 with the first MiniMoto SX. It has sold out every year and always provides some great racing. Everyone from McGrath, Stanton, Pingree, Lawrence, Pastrana, Metzger, and Costella have all made this race legendary.

The 2011 MiniMoto SX race is coming up May 6th in Las Vegas at the South Point Casino. It’s the day before the Las Vegas Supercross final at Sam Boyd Stadium, so make a weekend out of it. If you have a CRF50, TTR50, KLX110,CRF70, etc. you will want to be in Vegas for this race. It’s the closest thing you can do to a real Supercross on a pit bike!

They have classes for every size pit bike and riding ability, including three kids classes. The first class for kids is the 12″ youth class (MM12Y stock/mod). This is for kids that are 9-12 years old. Be sure to bring your birth certificate and AMA card! You can ride a KLX110, DRZ110, CRF70, or a TTR110. The bikes have to remain fairly stock. You can change tires, rims, bars, grips, pipes, pistons, etc. but they must remain fully automatic. They also have to use the stock frame, swingarm, cylinder, head, and carb. This way it keeps the class cheap and competitive for everyone. Most of the kids in this class are on bone stock 110s with a pipe and bars, so don’t be afraid to bring out your stocker.

The second class for kids at MiniMoto is the 10″ youth (MM10Y). It is for kids that are 13-17 years old. The bikes for this class are fully modified 50s. Most of them started out as CRF50s but the only thing left is some parts from the engine! The bike must remain air cooled and run a 10″ rear wheel, but after that almost anything goes.

The third class for kids is the 12″ youth (MM12Y). This class is for 13-17 year olds and you can ride fully modified 110s. Just like the fifty class, almost anything goes, as long as it remains air cooled and uses 110 sized wheels. There have been some great riders that have raced the youth classes over the years at MiniMoto. Blake Baggett, Will Hahn, and Jason Anderson are just a few who went on to make the big time.

If you are going to start practicing for MiniMoto, just remember it is all about corner speed. Practice figure eights with your buddies and bump to pass! MiniMoto is the tightest and most technical track you will ride on a mini-bike, so keep that in mind as you get ready.
